The suffix –ness is one of the most common noun-forming endings in English.
It usually expresses a state, quality, or condition. Most often, it attaches to adjectives.
Sometimes spelling changes occur (e.g., happy → happiness).
Not all adjectives take –ness naturally (beautiful → ✖ beautyness → correct form: beauty).

  1. Spelling changes:
    – y → i (happy → happiness, lazy → laziness).
    – But some short adjectives keep the y (shy → shyness).
  2. Register:
    – Some forms are more common (happiness, kindness), while others feel less natural (confusedness → often replaced by confusion).
  3. Synonyms / Alternatives:
    – Not all adjectives use –ness. Sometimes another suffix (–ity, –dom) or a different root word is preferred.
    beautiful → beauty (not beautyness).
